The Solitude needed for writing.
The Solitude needed for writing.
I’ve asked this question to many of the writers I know and am amused at some of the answers I receive. As a writer, I know the importance of uninterrupted time for the muse to work through us to let words flow. A ringing phone or someone poking their head into our inter sanctum to ask a simple question often breaks our concentration and ends the session.
I try to get my writing done in the wee hours of the morning when most people are asleep. This works for me most of the time, except when the muse refuses to be awake enough to work with me. Often I awaken at two or three AM and head for the coffee pot and my laptop. Words stream from my fingers often faster than my mind can keep track of them. Then I have to spend an hour or two correcting the Type-Os and grammar.
It is hard to write when you have a family or when everyday life keeps you busy. Often housework and yard work pile up on me until I have to take a day or two to catch up. This is easy for me since my children are grown. To be honest I never tried to write when they were young. I couldn’t find the time, yet I know plenty of writers you manage.
I’d love to have you reply to my question and maybe others can pick up some tips and tricks to help them along the way. “How do you find the quite time necessary to get your writing done?”

I agree with every word of that article. Yes, it takes quiet. Quiet is difficult to find.

Most of the year I live (with my husband of 41 years) in 280 sq feet of motorhome. There is no quiet place. I was an early morning person for years but I sleep fitfully now and can’t seem to manage to rise early very often, and when I do – there are sunrises to be seen. I have tried earphones but I can’t stand them. So I just write anyways with my husband watching Fox News or rustling the newspaper. Perhaps my writing would be better if I had quiet but if I wait for quiet, there will be no writing. So.. what the heck?
